Charlie Wilson’s War

Can you ever go wrong with Tom Hanks? Easy Answer. Any movie with Tom Hanks in it is sure to be gold. Add in the always amazing Philip Seymour Hoffman and you get Charlie Wilson’s War, a comedic and educational looks at how a Texas congressman drastically effects the war between the Soviets and Afghans.

Tom Hanks plays a Texas congressman, Charlie Wilson who despite his comedic attitude cares passionately about international politics and the war between the Afghans and the Soviets. When Gust Avrakotos (Philip Seymour Hoffman), an FBI agent teams with Wilson and Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts), they take the war into their own hands and supply the Afghans with anti-aircraft weapons to provide aid to the Afghan refugees and take power away from the Soviets.

Obviously since the story is historical there aren’t many surprises if you know what happened already. However, the script and acting adds a lot of spice to the film. The relationship between Hanks’ and Hoffman’s characters is great and provides for many humorous moments and great scenes. Tom Hanks does a great job as always of playing a character in a serious crisis but with a hint of sarcasm.

This isn’t quite the family film, but is sure to bring enjoyment and laughs to everyone who sees it. Plus, if you are oblivious to the story then you may just learn a thing or two. Do yourself a favor and go see a good movie such as this instead of Alien vs. Predator. AVP doesn’t have Tom Hanks in it.

Final Score: 9 out of 10
