The trailer left this movie shrouded in mystery as to what is happening during the movie, and why is Will Smith’s character the “last man on earth?” The answers behind the questions are sure to send some chills down your spine. The plot is rather interesting, and Will Smith does an amazing job playing Robert Neville, a former scientist, and the sole survivor of a devastating virus created by man that initially kills 588 million people in 2009.

We start out the movie learning more about the deadly virus which infected humanity, the Krippen Virus. A genetically re-engineered version of the measles virus, KV was supposed to cure cancer. When it began to cause violent symptoms and a lot of horrible side-effects, precautions were taken to try and contain the virus. Despite how careful they tried to be, the virus spread and infected everyone on earth. Ninety percent of those infected died, with less than one percent immune. The rest of the people were transformed into these flesh hungry beings full of rage.

Robert Neville, a former scientist, finds out he is one of the few that are immune to the outbreak and stays at stays at ground zero of the infection in order to find a cure. The now desolate Manhattan gives off a state of eerie calm. While it is interested and amazing to see how the earth has reclaimed the city, which plant life growing all over, and animals hunting each other, you can’t help but be put a little on edge seeing all these abandoned cars in the streets, crumbled buildings and destroyed bridges.

By far the most amazing thing about this movie is Will Smith’s performance. It is incredibly hard to act so many scenes with only a dog by your side, or even by yourself. It puts a lot of pressure on the actor to create internal conflict and show struggle within himself. Will Smith definitely delivered. The script was well written and the movie itself was directed extremely well. The simple silent parts injected throughout the film are more powerful than you would think.

I highly recommend going to see I Am Legend. It does have a few spooky scenes, and jumpy parts, but overall has an amazing story and does a good job separating itself from your traditional zombie/vampire and apocalyptic movies.

Final Score: 8 out of 10
