Chuck and Larry

Any movie that stars two comedy big shots such as Adam Sandler and Kevin James will always warrant a screening. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry also stars Jessica Biel, Dan Aykroyd, Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi and your usual Sandler actors. With a great cast, it puts all the pressure on the quality of the script and plot. Luckily, the movie follows though with a solid plot and very funny script.

From the start of the movie, you get the impression that Larry (James) is your average single parent, and Chuck (Sandler) is a woman hungry bachelor. They are both firefighters in Brooklyn, and have been close friends for a long time. They have a brotherhood saying that they always say before going into the fire, “Going in alive,” says one, followed by the other saying “Coming out the same way.” While joking around, Chuck accidently steps on some weak wooden floor which collapses, leaving him hanging about twenty feet above the ground. Larry stands under him when he starts to fall and catches him, sending them both to the emergency room, and saving Chuck’s life.

We learn that a government fault is preventing Larry from naming his two kids as his pension beneficiaries. He calls in a favor from Chuck (who said he owed Larry one) and asks for them to pretend to be a gay couple so Larry can get domestic partnership, and his kids can be his beneficiaries. Chuck agrees to go along with it, both thinking that after the paperwork gets filed, they could go back to their regular lives.

Things go a muck when the goverment decides to investigate their partnership and word gets out on the street that Chuck and Larry are a couple. They hire a lawyer (Biel) to consult them on how to fight the government with their “real” love for each other. Surprisingly, this movie becomes relative to current debates and struggles with homosexuality. Chuck and Larry have to defend their integrity and job status because of problems with coworkers, and gay stereotypes that are giving them a hard time.

I would recommend that anyone rent or purchase this movie. Not only is it very funny with extremely funny actors and actresses, but it has a good moral to the story and talks about some hot button issues our society is currently dealing with.

Final Score: 8 out of 10
